Brown Butter Almond Streusel Topping
about 2 1/2 cups
This topping comes from Pastry Chef Jens Melin. Browning the butter makes the streusel especially fragrant and flavorful. It's outstanding on muffins, crumble pie, and banana bread. You can also toast it and sprinkle it over ice cream.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sliced almonds
- 1 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
Directions
- In a large bowl, combine almonds, brown sugar, flour, and salt. Mix to combine.
- In a small saucepan, melt butter on medium heat. Continue to cook until foam subsides and butter solids turn golden brown and fragrant, about 6 to 8 minutes. Pour over almond mixture.
- Add almond extract and mix until evenly combined. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 4 weeks until ready to use.
