How to Prepare Izakaya (Japanese Bar Menu)

In Japan, an izakaya is a place to have a drink and unwind while you enjoy delicious bites of food. This menu of suggested items will help you create the same experience at home. Mix and match ready-to-eat items from the store with one or more of our recipes listed below.

Ingredients

  • Choose from the following ready-to-eat items:
  • Prepared Foods[/b]
  • Okonomiyaki
  • Chicken karaage
  • Sashimi
  • Freezer[/b]
  • Edamame
  • Grocery Aisle[/b]
  • Pickled ginger
  • Soy sauce
  • Cook any or all of the following recipes:
  • Tempura
  • Onigiri (grilled rice balls)
  • Sunomono (Japanese pickled cucumber)
  • Spinach Goma-ae (Spinach with sesame dressing)
  • Yasai Yaki (grilled vegetable skewers)

Directions

  1. If you are preparing one or more of the suggested recipes, make them ahead of time to be ready for your izakaya. If you are making tempura, do the batter and frying steps very close to serving time.
  2. About 40 minutes before serving, preheat oven to 300°F. Place okonomiyaki and karaage in oven 15 to 20 minutes until heated through. Lower temperature to 200°F and keep food warm until ready to serve.
  3. While heating food, cook edamame according to package directions.
  4. Plate sashimi and the rest of the menu items. Serve everything together and enjoy.
